Basic Principles of Social Media

We all know about social media. After many blog posts talking about Social Media and how Graphic Designers use it we have learned something about all these platforms. However, do we know what are the principles of Social Media. What are the basics to be on it as an individual as well as company or business? Today, I will show you the most important basics about Social Media.


The first word tells you all, you have to be Social! Social Media is all about creating or building communities and sharing with others. The more social you can be the best your social media will be. You want people to engage with your content, to like your page and posts and to comment about you. in order to achieve that, you need to make sure you do the same with the community. Engage with others to create a community. It is not enough to post good content if you don’t  attract users to it.

2. 80/20 Rule

What is  the 80/20 rule you may think? It is very easy. Do you like to follow people that every single post is selling you their product or service? I personally get tired of people that just sell their product and do not give any other content. Many people in Social Media agree with me in that, so they created the 80/20 rule. The rule means that in order to not make your users bored or tired about your product, your content has to be 80% free content (not selling or not asking for users to do anything) and 20% can be selling a product or asking for an action to take by the consumer. That way consumers keep the interest and the engagement up!

3. Be Consistent

Make sure you post at least once a day in all your social media. Posting is a reminder of your brand for the consumers. Even if it is free content, users want to see that you are active al the time. If you go a week or two with no posting, consumers might unfollow you because you don’t  bring them any content or information that they expected to see when they started following you.

NOTE: Do not post too much in one day because users also get overwhelmed.

With only those three things you know the basics of Social Media. But remember, it is all about being social, so, whatever you do, do not forget that step!
